They could choose a number of other professional photographers and they pick me … it is humbling to say the least. I had a trip planned to visit family in Boardman, Ohio for a weekend and let everyone know I would be offering photography sessions as well, while in town. Tarisha saw my announcement on my Facebook page about some openings in my schedule. She quickly contacted me after seeing the post for more information. She is just starting her journey into the photography business and it was time for her to have some professional headshots for her own website.

Just like most photographers I know (including me), Tarisha was not looking forward to being on the other side of the camera. I am not sure what it is, but for some reason, photographers prefer to create beautiful images but not be in them!! We had a fun and casual photo session and I was able to quickly put her at ease about being in front of the lens. My favorite place to photograph when I am home, is Downtown Youngstown and Tarisha agreed that it would be a great area for her photos. Downtown is a perfect urban backdrop with a lot of history and texture all around. We met up at 11 am and it was already a hot and humid day. The good news is we did not walk too far and stayed in the shade as much as possible!!

I had to chuckle when she saw the final images. She said that if more of her photos turned out like these, she might not have such an aversion to being photographed. Thank you so very much Tarisha for entrusting me to create some fun headshots of you for your business!

The blog has been a little slow lately as I’ve been in and out of town a lot. And the blog will probably be a little quiet over the next few weeks as well. I’m revamping my products and pricing for the upcoming year. For some silly reason, I decided mid-December to redesign the website as well. It’s been down ever since and I need to dedicate some time to getting it finished and back up! And I’m also working on the details for the 2012 Cutest Dog in Columbus contest! Entries will be accepted starting in late January, more details to come in the following weeks.

It’s time for my favorite images from the year. I’ve picked my 10 favorite images from all the portrait sessions I photographed in 2011. In previous years, I’ve picked my top three images from each type of session, this year I’m mixing it up to my top 10. It was hard to pick my favorites and to not make them all images of dogs. Because we all know how dog-obsessed I am. Sit back, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy some of my favorites form 2011!

Their wedding was so much fun! This image is from their engagement session in Youngstown at the Covered Bridge at Lanterman’s Mill at Mill Creek Park.

I’m excited to say that they became engaged over the holidays! We weren’t sure what the weather was going to do for us on at their session – but it turned out fantastic. And Jenny did a great job with clothing choices and colors for fall portraits.

The end result was even better than I expected!

Hannah was so much fun to work with for her senior portrait session. I photographed the much cooler Rebecca Black the personal trainer from right here in Columbus. If you’re from Central Ohio, chances are good you may have seen her on the local news or TMZ that the fan pages for each Rebecca had merged into one page. The local Rebecca is a certified personal trainer and also a fitness bikini competitor. Needless to say there was a bit of confusion on Facebook as to which Rebecca’s page people were following.

I initially “met” Rebecca on Twitter. After some tweets back and forth, I found out she grew up not far from where I did and I knew people who graduated from high school with her – such a small world! We have met in person a few times now and she’s great. Rebecca has such a fun personality and is truly dedicated to helping people improve their bodies and lifestyle. She will soon be opening Bexa Body Fitness in Westerville and I can’t wait to see it. Better yet, I need to join so she can get my butt in shape! She’ll be offering boot camps, zumba, yoga, personal training and a lot more. She currently has a blog called Strong Body by Rebecca that offers more information about her training and also some great tips for getting and staying health.

I had an opening in my schedule and asked Rebecca if she was interested in modeling for some lifestyle and headshot photos. We had to reschedule, but the new date ended up being the nicest day of Indian Summer. It was 70° that day, the sun was shining and no one was out at the park in Gahanna where we were. Since she has already modeled in the past, it was such an easy session, Rebecca knew what the best poses were for her body and figure. Plus she’s so darn pretty, there’s no way she could take a bad photo. Here are a few of my favorites from the session!

Without a doubt, when models are looking for work, first impressions matter! Majoury was looking to update her modeling portfolio and I wanted to try out some lighting techniques on a model in the Columbus area. Our first session for portraits was rained out, so we had to reschedule a few weeks later when we could both fit it in our schedules. I am so glad we were finally able to get together! And the weather was perfect when we were able to meet up.

We started Majoury’s session around Creekside Plaza in Gahanna. I photographed her in natural light settings and she had a variety of clothing to work with. As always, I’m thrilled when anyone I photograph has their makeup professionally done. She used Felicia Thalasin as her makeup artist and Felicia did an outstanding job! Towards the end of the session I asked Majoury to be my guinea pig for some lighting setups I wanted to tryout. I must say, those test photographs are probably my favorite from the day!

Majoury is a beauty and I cannot wait to see what her modeling career has in store for her. She was amazing to work with and I know that this type of work is so easy for her. When I was driving home from the session, she texted me that she enjoyed working with me and hoped we could collaborate on projects in the future. She is definitely on my list of great models to work with on personal projects!

Here are just a few of the headshots I captured of her during our time together. Thanks Majoury, for being an amazing model and a wonderful subject to photograph!

The funny thing about the “recession” is that it lead not only myself, but also Bill towards our true passions in art. Bill would spend his days being an art director and his weekends on his hobbies of traveling and creating art by pastel or painitng. Then one day, Bill was another victim of layoffs and budget cuts. That was probably one of the best things that could have happened to him. Bill was formally trained in commercial art and design and had a wonderful, long career in advertising. So when life gave him a little hiccup, he decided to spend his time working on his oil paintings and doing what he truly loved.

Bill is an amazing painter and completely self-taught. He and his wife, Ginger, love to take trips to various small-towns, which are the inspiration for his paintings. I was so happy when we finally picked a date for his portrait session at his home. Since he didn’t have a headshot or any type of current photograph of himself on his website, it was time for one. I wanted to capture him in his working environment and our number one rule was to not be cheesy! We agreed that there would not be any photographs of him with an ascot and holding a paint brush. This session was so fun – chatting about our new “work” and how nice it is to do we we love. I had never visited Bill’s wonderful Clintonville home and enjoyed taking a tour to figuring out which area to use as a backdrop. Of course, his basement studio was a perfect match. I was able to photograph him where he spends most of his time, painting the interesting scenery that he finds while traveling.

If you would like to see more of Bill’s work, his art is online at williamvoisard.com. The images on his website are just a very small portion of what he has created.
