I know, we’re in Northeast Ohio, but I swear warm weather will be here soon! It is time to start thinking about what to wear for upcoming portrait sessions. It can be a daunting task especially for family and group photographs. While picking out clothing for photo sessions is a bit easier for individual kids and high school senior portraits, it is always a great idea to know what works well together.

The Pantone color report for 2013 says that emerald will be the color of the year. This year the stores will be filled with green-colored clothing and jewels to add to your wardrobe. It doesn’t hurt that my birthstone is the emerald, either!

Green is a color that works well on almost every skin tone. You can easily combine it with a multitude of other colors.

So now that you know what the color trend is for this year, how do you use it for your portrait session? I found this amazing website, Design Seeds on Pinterest to help anyone looking for color combos. The site offers fun and pretty palettes to help those who may be a little stumped on color choices that go well together. Below are a few color combinations I pulled for Emerald on Design Seeds – there were some unexpected, yet pretty combos for clothing ideas!

Don’t forget to check out past What To Wear blog posts for more ideas on clothing choices for portraits.

It’s time to add punches of color to our wardrobes. It is also a great time to book a portrait session under the budding trees and next to blossoming flowers.

Here is a great clothing selection for a family portrait session. Not planning a family session? Not a problem! I always refer couples for engagement sessions to take a look at the What to Wear choices for their sessions, too. It really helps clients to have a visual on coordinating clothes without being matchy-matchy.

This year’s clothing trends include making a bold statement in cobalt blue. This shade works well during all seasons and has been spotted quite a bit on the runway and with celebrities rocking out the color. As shown in the image below, pair it with green for a real pop in color. If that’s too much color for you, try a dark denim and navy ensemble with a sprinkle of cobalt in accessories or a tank.

Outfits pictured can be easily found at Old Navy, Piperlime and Target for an inexpensive ensemble for your portraits.

I am quickly booking up for April and May portraits. If you would like to schedule a session, contact me soon so that we can chat more about what you’re looking for!

I love posting these outfit ideas so clients can be inspired to figure out the best clothing choices for their portraits. Below is a great winter look that is casual and contains a great color scheme, but is not super matchy. None of the patterns are too bold that they fight with each other when paired together. I love sweaters, they just make me feel cozy looking at them. Looking for more clothing inspiration before your portraits? Check out my other What to Wear blog posts.

Speaking of clothing and inspiration, are you on Pinterest? At first I didn’t get it, but now … it’s a tiny obsession of mine. Every night before bed, I pickup my iPad instead of a book and see what’s going on over at Pinterest. There is a ton of clothing inspiration on the site to keep your eyes occupied for days. So what is Pinterest? You can create virtual “pin boards” of images and sites that you love. No more saving snip-its of information and photos to your desktop or sending yourself an email reminder about a new coat that you want to buy. Pin it to find it later when you’re looking for it again. I have tons of boards from cute animals to outfits I want to buy to DIY projects. Buy I’m warning you right now, it’s completely addictive once you get started.

So who is Pinterest for? I think pretty much everyone. Brides planning their weddings, teachers looking for great classroom ideas, people planning on remodeling their homes and a lot of others, as well. And since this blog started out about what to wear for portraits, it’s a huge inspiration with clothing, shoes and accessories.

Pinterest is by invitation only. If you’d like an invitation – either leave a comment below or comment on my Facebook Page with your email address and I’ll get one sent to you. But don’t say that you haven’t been warned! And I’ve even added a Pin It button below, so if you’re inspired by anything you see on the blog, pin it so you can remember where you found it.

These outfit ideas also work great as a place to start out with for outfit concepts for a full family session. I love capturing small groups within families at portrait sessions, to show a variety of relationships within the family. The outfits below are from Abercrombie, Hollister, Old Navy and Wet Seal. You definitely do not need to break the bank to come up with some great, coordinating outfits for your portraits, or even a fun Mother’s Day out on the town. Here is an example of some great coordination from Melissa and Emma. I took a few minutes out of the family session while the guys were changing into their next outfits to capture just mom and daughter.

I had a lot of people thank me for not only sharing my thoughts on how to coordinate a family session, but also the visuals to help them get started in preparing their outfits. With spring right around the corner and my schedule starting to fill up quickly, I thought it would be a good time to share another sample of what to wear to coordinate your family for their portrait session. I’ve also added a sample what to wear image for a senior girl’s session with four cute outfits. Check out the images below for tips on how to pair outfits together for your upcoming session.
