Surprise Dog Portraits: Griffin & Riley in Westerville

More dog portraits as Christmas gifts! Griffin & Riley are “cousins” with Giggsy and Laney that I photographed the week before. Their dog moms, both of whom are named Katie, decided to gift their husbands with a super secret gift of dog portraits for the holidays.

As I pulled up to our location for the portrait session, it started to rain. I whipped out my iPhone to see what the problem was. Did you know being an on location photographer also requires being a meteorologist? Good news, the rain was going to hold off for this one. Luckily, the sprinkles didn’t last long and we started the boy’s photos on time. I’m quickly falling in love with this location in Westerville for dog portraits. It may be my new favorite place in Columbus for photo sessions!

Griffin is a 6-year-old Labradoodle with a ton of energy. Riley is also a 6-year-old mixed breed who doesn’t want to leave his mom’s side. You never know how different dogs will act during a photo session, just like kids. I worked with each dog individually before I attempted to put them together for a portrait. Riley was happy to listen, as long as mom didn’t get too far away from him. Griffin was bouncing full of energy and it was hard for him to sit still. Once the dogs were comfortable with me and done exploring the new area, I was able to create a few images of the two of them. Mom even brought along some new ties for them to wear!

Clients always apologize for their dogs’ behavior during a session, but I rarely photograph a dog that is perfect, or even close to perfect. Griffin and Riley did a great job considering they were out in a new location with a complete stranger with a camera making crazy noises and blowing whistles to get their attention.

I’m so glad the rain held off for us and I was able to photograph these two handsome dogs against the backdrop of the fall colors. I’m excited to see what Katie picks for her husband’s surprise holiday gift. Thanks Katie for letting me photograph your boys and picking me to capture lasting memories of them.

Columbus Senior Portrait Photography, Hannah Class of 2012

A beautiful fall day in Gahanna made for a gorgeous session for Hannah’s senior portraits. Creekside is one of my favorite locations in Columbus for photos. There is a great mix of variety from the park to more urban looks in the plaza. And by urban, I’m not talking graffiti, but lines, colors and textures that compliment the senior’s look and style.

Hannah is a very busy girl during her last year of high school and a little late in getting her senior portraits done. Her yearbook deadline is right around the corner, but we were both able to work her session into our schedules, in order to meet the deadline. Hannah is a senior at Hilliard Darby and is involved in a ton of activities. She plays the bassoon and is active in marching band, Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra, improv club and a volunteer at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Needless to say, she doesn’t have a lot of free time on her hands to just chill out with that busy life. Plus she even has a part time job as a waitress at a cafe!

Hannah was a blast during her session and we chatted about life, boys, school, clothes and her list of colleges that she is applying to. She has a wonderful and outgoing personality which shined through in her portraits. She was an absolute delight to work with and made my job so easy to photograph her.

Hannah, thank you for choosing Danielle Neil Photography to capture your senior portraits. You have such a positive spirit and great personality that I know you will go far in life with such a great attitude! There were so many great photos from her session and here are a few of my favorites from then.

Fall Dog Portraits in Westerville for Christmas Gifts!

I love when dog owners contact me about portraits of their pets for their spouses. Who wouldn’t love to open a gift of art of their furry best friend? Katie is one of those owners who wanted photographs of her two dogs, Giggsy and Laney, for her husband. After finding out more about the dogs and their personalities, we decided on a location in Westerville.

Since Katie was surprising her husband with these portraits, she came to the location by herself with the dogs. I figured it was in everyone’s best interest to get the individual images out of the way before attempting to get them both together for a photograph. We started with Laney, who is a Boxer and Lab mix. I love her coat – it is such interesting shades of browns and blacks with the prettiest pattern to it. She was adopted from Franklin County Dog Shelter when she was two years old and is a very sweet and submissive girl. Once I was able to capture some images of Laney, it was time to move on to  her brother, Giggsy. Both dogs are three-years-old, but Giggsy was rescued from the Clinton County Humane Society when he was just a baby at 8-weeks-old. Giggsy is full of life and was all over the place for his portraits. He has the most beautiful look. He is a combination of Husky, Golden Retriever and Shepherd. Both dogs were great and at times, we were able to have them both off leash without any issues. As long as Katie and I had treats or balls in hand for the kids, they were content.

I love the light at this location in Westerville, not far from Hoover Dam. A fellow photographer that I am friends with, recently told me about this area and I fell in love the moment I went to scout it out. I wish I owned this piece of property, I could photograph dogs, kids and families here every day and never be bored with the setting. The location made an amazing backdrop with the fall colors being in their prime that weekend. It was easier than I expected to photograph the dogs together. Again, there was always a ball involved to keep them motivated!

I’m so glad Katie selected me to photograph her dogs. I cannot wait to see which images she chooses for her husband’s Christmas gift!

Why I Volunteer My Time Photographing Dogs & Cats

mastiff mix dog
Once I went full time with my photography business this year, my number one goal was finding shelters and rescues to work with. These dogs and cats have just one chance to make a lasting impression on their potential owners. I’ve been known to flip through Petfinder.com and the right photograph stops me in my tracks. I was thrilled when both Pets Without Parents in Clintonville and Noah’s Too – The Rescue Foundation in Gahanna, decided to let me show them what I could do to help increase their adoptions.

I can’t say that deciding to volunteer with these groups was my idea. One of the main goals of a group I belong to, HeARTs Speak, is to create a community for artists who’s goal is to donate their time and services to help save these animals’ lives. One of the members, Teresa Berg, was featured on CBS News recently, because of her work with adoptable animals. To see Teresa’s interview – click here. I met Teresa back in 2009 when I attended the Unleashed Pet Photography workshop that she was co-teaching. Teresa shared with us her work with rescues and when she began photographing these adoptable dogs, their adoption rate increased 100%!

If you are a pet photographer, I highly suggest helping a rescue or shelter that does not have a professional photographer volunteering their time. It is such a rewarding experience! I also recommend checking out the HeArts Speak website and consider applying for membership if you plan on working with shelters or rescue groups. These artists are more than happy to share ideas and tips with each other, in our quest to find these animals homes.

I recently received another email from a family that adopted one of the dogs I photographed. When I read emails like this, I know that it is worth every minute that I spend photographing the dogs and cats.

Hi Danielle,

My family recently adopted a dog (Cheyenne, now Grace) from Noah’s Too – The Rescue Foundation in Gahanna. After looking at thousands (literally thousands) of beautiful dogs in need of homes on Petfinder, we came across Cheyenne’s picture. Out of all of the dogs, we chose to meet Cheyenne first.

While Cheyenne’s personality and temperment (and my current dog liking her – not an easy thing for him:)were the ultimate decisions on why we adopted her … it was your pictures that lead us to her! Thank you for donating your time and talent to these deserving animals. Please know your generosity truly made a difference!!!!

Sincerely, Courtney

And while we’re on the subject of adoptable animals that need homes – the photographs above, are of  Abby Jo from Noah’s Too – The Rescue foundation. What a sweet girl she is. When I photographed her, she had only been at Noah’s for about 24-hours. Hopefully she’ll be able to find her furever home soon! Here is a link to Abby’s information on Petfinder.

Images for a Cure Is Going to the Dogs | Pet Portraits at Creekside Gahanna

Lhasa Apsos are intelligent, lively, spirited and devoted little dogs and when I photographed Max, he was no exception. Max’s people, Casey and Lou, scheduled an Images for a Cure session for Max. Another great photography session that helps support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. And just as great, I got to photograph another dog.

Max’s session was at Creekside in Gahanna where I was able to capture some images in the park area as well as the plaza, which has a modern feel to it. Max even came prepared with a special red bow-tie collar for a few of his photographs. He was great during our session and would do anything asked … especially if the reward included a treat.

I had to chuckle when some kids rode past us and Max became very upset, barking loudly at them. I learned quickly that he does not like bikes! Anyone else that walked past us was perfectly fine and there were no noises or barks to be had, just those darn kids on the bikes!

Thank you to Casey, Lou and Max for choosing me to photograph your furbaby! I enjoyed working with your family and loved playing, I mean photographing, Max!
