Contemporary Child Portrait Session with Riley in Downtown Columbus

Riley was one of my two Fresh Face contest winners in the spring and we were finally able to squeeze in her portrait session the other weekend. Although a little on the warm side, we had a great session with the sun shining! Riley really opened up to me and was pretty chatty from the start of our time together. I learned all about her trips to Disney World and her favorite book that she’s reading right now, “Fantastic Mr. Fox”. We had a great session and you can tell from her portraits how relaxed she was during our photo shoot.

When I talked to Riley’s mom to plan the session location and date, I found out that Riley wears Matilda Jane clothes. Once I had that snippet of information, I automatically thought of a location in Downtown Columbus to match her style. A lot of children portrait photographers are in love with the look of these clothes, myself included. If you’re not familiar with Matilda Jane, their items are sold through in-home trunk shows and these colorful, cool and playful pieces really let little girls shine in comfortable and stylish clothes. Riley and her mom came armed with a huge selection of outfits and shoes for her portraits and I let Riley pick her favorites for her session and she made some great selections!

With so many great looks, it was hard to narrow it down to just a few images for this blog post. Here are just a few from Riley’s portrait session in the Arena District.

When Riley appeared in this outfit I knew I had to pull an umbrella out of my trunk to match. Check out those great boots too!

I'm not sure what was so funny for this set, but I love the genuine smile on her face.

Not only does this little girl have a great look (and great hair) but such a fun personality too!

Kids Portrait Photography Session at Mill Creek Park With a Side of Rain

I had the opportunity to spend the weekend away from Columbus and traveled north to the Youngstown area to visit family and photograph few of my clients that live there. The weather on Saturday was not promising with pop-up thunderstorms all day, but leading up to the portrait session for these two kids, the sun was out and shining brightly. Shortly after arriving at Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek Park, the rain also arrived. The good news was that no one was using Kidston Pavilion, so we had a great sheltered area for James and Lilly’s portraits. Although we were contained to one area, I was able to get some photos of these two adorable children in. Lilly is such a talker and you would never guess she was only 4-years-old with all the funny stories she tells. And baby James was one of the happiest babies I’ve ever seen. Hopefully the next time I photograph these two cuties, we’ll have better luck with the weather so we can really get out in the park and play.

Look at those big blue eyes!! What a happy guy he was.

Mom did a great job with all of Lilly's outfits for her portraits - I love when clients bring coordinating accessories like hats!!

I'm not sure what story she was telling me for this photograph - but her hands clasped together is just perfect!

Little Miss May’s Portrait Session at Creekside

I was excited for this portrait session over the weekend in Gahanna – adorable little May was one of my 2010 Fresh Face Portrait Contest winners. I was planning on doing her photos in Downtown Columbus, but with the Race for the Cure overtaking the area, we figured it was a better plan to go to a suburban park. If May looks familiar, it’s because I photographed her almost two years ago. There’s actually an image of her from that session, chasing after bubbles, in the slideshow at the top of the blog. May was quite the ham for the camera and needs no direction at all! As soon as she heard the shutter click, she moved into her next pose. I swear, she must have been sneaking in some episodes of America’s Next Top Model before her portraits, with her little head tilt and all! When I did happen to catch May off guard for some more candid portraits, she would stare at me with a surprised look because she hadn’t “posed” for it.

Sneak Peek ~ Julia’s Portrait Session {Columbus Kids Photographer}

I was excited that Julia and her mom, Sandy, decided to travel to Columbus from northeast Ohio yesterday for her portrait session. Julia is a talented singer at the ripe old age of 10 and was in need of photos for her press kit and music CD. Since they were traveling to Columbus, we decided Franklin Park Conservatory would be the best option if there happened to be bad weather. When we started the session it was raining, but about halfway through the rain stopped and we headed outside. I was able to capture a nice combination of photos both inside and outside thanks to the break in the weather. Below are just a few of my favorites from the day, which all happen to be from when we were outside. Good luck in with your singing, Julia! I see great things in your future!!
