Gahanna Engagement Session for Monique & Brian

Blessed with yet another perfect spring day in Columbus and I happened to have a photo session scheduled. I met up with Monique and Brian at Creekside in Gahanna for their engagement photos. I have known the couple for a few years now, even before they started dating. At one point they both worked for George and this fantastic couple actually met through work. Monique and Brian decided on the Creekside backdrop for their engagement photographs and we had a lovely time. It was a very quiet weekday afternoon session at the park and around the Creekside area. I was a bit shocked that there weren’t more people out and about on an almost 80 degree day!

They couple will be married on Memorial Day weekend in an intimate ceremony and reception near their home in Columbus. They have been busy planning away the last few months to make their special day perfect. Not only has keeping the wedding small helped reduce the stress down of planning, they  also get to celebrate one of the best days of their lives with their closest family and friends. Although I do not normally photograph weddings, I will be the photographer for their wedding day. I am honored that they chose me to capture all the details of their wedding.

Here are a few of my favorite images from their engagement session. Check back in June for images from their wedding.  It is going to be a great time!

If you're wondering about what Monique's tattoo down her arm — she decided to get some new ink right after Brian proposed to her. In French, it says: "When there is true love, there are no regrets of the past."

Portraits in Spring | What to Wear {Columbus Photographer}

Can you believe it, spring is finally here in Columbus, Ohio! It’s time to add punches of color to our wardrobes. It is also a great time to book a portrait session under the budding trees and next to blossoming flowers.

Here is a great clothing selection for a family portrait session. Not planning a family session? Not a problem! I always refer couples for engagement sessions to take a look at the What to Wear choices for their sessions, too. It really helps clients to have a visual on coordinating clothes without being matchy-matchy.

This year’s clothing trends include making a bold statement in cobalt blue. This shade works well during all seasons and has been spotted quite a bit on the runway and with celebrities rocking out the color. As shown in the image below, pair it with green for a real pop in color. If that’s too much color for you, try a dark denim and navy ensemble with a sprinkle of cobalt in accessories or a tank.

Outfits pictured can be easily found at Old Navy, Piperlime and Target for an inexpensive ensemble for your portraits.

I am quickly booking up for April and May portraits. If you would like to schedule a session, contact me soon so that we can chat more about what you’re looking for!

A Photographer & Her Dog In the Short North

What’s better than photographs of your new puppy? Photographs of you and your new puppy! Fellow photographer, Melissa, called me to set-up a session for her and her dog, Bailey. Since she’s also a photographer, she has been capturing images of her puppy and also Bailey with the kids. But, Melissa was really looking forward to a session with her and the dog. I was thrilled, because since she had gotten Bailey in December, I still had not had the chance to meet the puppy. This beautiful German Shepherd was just shy of 6-months old at our session and with possibly another 40 pounds to go, she will be one big girl when she is done growing.

Like most of the East Coast, Columbus has seen the most amazing spring weather early this season. With near record highs, plenty of sunshine and breezes, it has been a photographer’s dream. Melissa and I decided the Short North, near downtown Columbus, would be perfect for photos with her dog. Bailey was certainly a handful at the session, she was so concerned with everything going on around her, I could barely hold her attention. And barking, there was a lot of barking at all the other dogs in the area. Needless to say, many Pupperonies were waved around and given out so that I could get and hold her attention. Below are just a few of my favorite photographs from this session of a dog and her owner.

I had to get a few of the puppy on her own!

I have to add that Melissa has done an amazing job transforming her body! She has lost over 30 pounds in the last few months! A better night’s sleep, exercise and watching what she is eating has done a fabulous job. Her hard work has really paid off for her! I snapped a few photographs of her alone at the end of the session. She wanted to show her transformation in a newsletter she was sending to her clients. Below is a photograph that I took of her and her business partner, Sarah, last September next to a current photograph. Congratulations Melissa on your weight loss, you look fantastic!

Columbus Dogs & Cats Up For Adoption

Many of the faces at Pets Without Parents were new additions this visit to the rescue. I was sad to hear a few of the puppies were at the vet for checkups the day I was scheduled to take photos. But I did photograph 12 wonderful dogs and cats this time. There was a group of super cute kittens there as well, but no need for photos since they were all spoken for! I’m always thrilled when there are animals that do not need photographed because they have already found their new homes.

I am glad that I can use my talent and free time to photograph the dogs and cats in Columbus that are in search of their new homes. Real estate agents post the best looking photographs of houses on the market, knowing that a quality photograph can be a make or break opportunity for a viewing. The same goes for professional photographs of the animals at rescues and shelters that are looking for their new parents. If someone is in search of a dog or cat to adopt, the better the photograph, the better the opportunity that they will stop at the shelter to meet that pet.

Rescue animals frequently battle a stigma that they are bad, untrained or sick. Many times, the owner is moving, no longer wants the pet or no longer has the time or resources to care for their animal. That is not the case! Rescue animals can thrive with the right owner and they form amazing bonds with their new parents. Two of the cats I photographed this time, Liza and Leo were returned to Pets Without Parents. In 2006, they were adopted as kittens from the shelter. The owner’s daughter left for college, so the owner decided she no longer wanted to take care of the two cats by herself! I cannot imagine just returning one of my amazing pets, because I did not “feel” like taking care of them. So now Liza and Leo are looking for a new home, together, where they can spend the rest of their lives blooming.

Take a look at the beautiful dogs and cats below that are in search of homes. Do you know someone who is considering adopting a new pet? Click one of the links at the bottom of this post to Tweet This, Share On Facebook, Email to a Friend or Pin on Pinterest. Let’s get these animals new homes so Pets Without Parents can house more pets in search of their new owners.

Will Your Photos Live Forever? {Columbus Photographer}

This weekend I was going through my notes from After Dark and during one of the classes, a photography mentor played the below video. Kodak released this ad back in 2005 and I’m ashamed to say, I had never seen it. Keep Me, Protect Me, Share Me is worth taking a few minutes out of your day to watch. Not only is it a reminder of why we should all print the photos we have, especially those of your family. Which, I still need to get caught up on. This brings up a blog post I had shared a while back, Will Your Grandchildren Be Upset With You?, that talks about the importance of printing your images for future generations.

This video also reminds me that I carry a huge responsibility to my clients. Their memories are in my hands. Whether it is a photograph of their toddler playing, high school senior moving on to the adult world or a sick pet who is a member of their family, their moments can live forever with my work. That is one of the reasons why I participate in educational opportunities and strive to become an even better photographer.  Also, I am pleased to offer the best quality work to my clients that will be handed down to future generations. I am blessed that my clients choose me to photograph their memories and moments.

Keep Me, Protect Me, Share Me and I will live forever.

April 2, 2012

Karen Thaemert - I totally agree! Thanks for sharing this.

March 27, 2012

Dallas portrait photographer-Shades of You Photography - This is such a great reminder. I’m terrible with my own personal photographs and its just awful. I need to print a lot of things…technology changes. I know that I can’t depend on “the disk” forever.

March 20, 2012

Vanessa G. Photography -Fayetteville Newborn Photographer - Such great points. I’m not a big fan of the disk of images idea.
